Un petit garçon tant mystérieux que prodige, voit son père et leur intense complicité, disparaître lors des attentats du 11 septembre 2001. Habitué à jouer aux chasses aux trésors de par les défis que lui lançait son père, c'est lorsqu'il retrouve une clé dans les affaires de son père qu'il se lance dans une quête effrénée visant à lui révéler ce qu'elle ouvre et ce qu'elle signifie.
Avec Tom Hanks pour père et Sandra Bullock pour mère, le jeune Thomas Horn (petit garçon) promet une belle entrée dans le monde du 7ème art.
